Nottingham Roof Cleaning
Nottingham's wet winters and clay-rich soil create near-ideal conditions for moss and algae growth on roof surfaces. North-facing slopes and properties under tree canopy — common across Mapperley Park, Wollaton, Sherwood and The Park estate — are the worst affected.
The city has a high proportion of Victorian and Edwardian properties with original clay or slate tiles. These are fragile and absolutely must not be pressure washed — high pressure cracks tile edges, dislodges pointing and can force water under the tile bed. We use soft wash and hand brushing only on these materials.
Modern concrete tiles on post-war estates — common in Arnold, Carlton, Bestwood and Bilborough — are more durable but still benefit from biocide treatment rather than pressure, which strips the tile surface coating over time.
Left untreated, moss retains moisture against tiles through freeze-thaw cycles, accelerating cracking and reducing roof life significantly. Treatment every 3–5 years is far cheaper than re-roofing.
Common Questions
A typical three-bed semi costs £200–400. Larger or more complex properties quoted after survey. Price is fixed before we start — no surprises on the day.
Yes — soft wash uses low pressure biocide solution only. Victorian slate must never be pressure washed. We use soft wash and hand brushing on all fragile or antique tile types.
Yes. Wet winters, clay soils and significant tree coverage across much of Nottingham create near-ideal moss growing conditions. North-facing slopes and shaded roofs are particularly susceptible.
Treated moss dies within weeks and washes away over 3–6 months with normal rainfall. We can brush off loose moss on the day for an immediate visual improvement.
